Project Start Workshop

Because the obvious isn’t actually obvious:

The Start Workshop as a piggy bank for the project.

Asking the right questions at the beginning is what gets a project off to a good start. The start workshop creates transparency and commitment. It clarifies differences in opinion that otherwise would not get clarified or would come to the surface in the wrong places. It ensures that the time available is optimally invested in the project. Based on past experience a good start workshop saves from 10 - 20% of the work hours required in the first 6 months of the project. It eliminates inefficiencies, thereby saving time and money. The start workshop sharpens the mind and the tools of the participants and thus adds value to the project.
Platon knew: “The beginning is the most important part of the work”. That means that even those things that appear obvious to all need to be specifically clarified and committed to:

  • What product and/or service will be delivered at the end of the project?
  • What is the exact assignment and when is it finished?
  • What is the framework that the team must understand and work within?
  • Who are the stakeholders and how will the team communicate with them?
  • What is the rough procedure to be followed and what milestones need to be reached by when?
  • What are the roles in the team and the related competencies and responsibilities?
  • How will the team work together (communication, filing, rules)?
  • What risks are there in the project and what will be done to mitigate them
  • What exactly is the team planning for the weeks following the project start?
  • How will the tasks in the project be tracked?

These questions need to be put on the table in a structured way so that participants can raise and discuss their objections and concerns. In this way a consensus can be formed which becomes the basis for constructive and friction free teamwork in the following months.
